Median Gold Valuation as of 6/1/23: $3,969/60 USD / troy oz

Median Silver Valuation as of 6/1/23: $180.05 USD / troy oz

United States Government Historical Value of Metals

Consider the historical values that the United States government has placed on gold and silver.

The book value of gold has been $20.67 / troy oz from 1839-1933, $35 / troy oz from 1933-1973, and $42.2222 / troy oz since 1973.

Similarly, silver once had a monetary value of $1.293 / troy oz starting in 1913.

Using these valuations as-is are not very realistic in our opinion, so we consider them just one piece of the puzzle in valuation. These valuations can be adjusted using various inflation adjustments, which we will discuss in more details in a page on inflation.
